Siberian huskies are not your average dog. They are highly intelligent, sensitive, and energetic. To a Siberian, running is what they live for! They were bred to run and will find a way to do it on their own if they cannot do it with your supervision. Huskies require daily exercise!

Siberian huskies are bred to run and run fast. They can go about 18 miles per hour pulling a grown man. If they get away from you-don't chase them-they will think it is a game. Better to sit down where you are and call them to you, or run in the opposite direction while calling to them so they will chase you. If none of this works, get in your car and follow. The point of this paragraph is keep your husky on a leash or in your yard.

Siberian huskies can disappear like magic. I have often said, "If you can see over the top of it, plant grass under it, or pour water through it, a husky can get out of it. Huskies escape most often when left alone-they will go looking for you. A husky is not running away from home when he leaves; he is just running! And if you are lucky and a car or a human does not stop him, he will come back to you. Unfortunately, because of their love of people and lack of caution, they often wind up lost or dead when they get out of their own yard. Always make sure your fence is in good repair and your gates are securely closed.

Siberian huskies have a strong predatory instinct. Most often they are not good with small animals such as cats and bunnies (and tiny dogs). Some have been known to get along with all creatures great and small, but usually huskies find smaller animals to be nothing more than chew toys.

Siberian huskies are sometimes destructive in the back yard. Sometimes this subsides with maturity, sometimes not. If you are a big fan of ornamental plants and topiary, you may have to take some additional time in choosing your Siberian husky.

Siberian huskies are gregarious and loving. By nature, huskies like to live in groups so make sure your dog is included in family fun. They give all their heart to their families, usually for a couple of scoops of kibble and a daily walk. This is a great bargain! Huskies can sometimes challenge their new owner, but if you are a benevolent leader and friend to your dog, you will have earned his love.
