Well, not so fast. Once upon a time, dogs were allowed to run free, returning home at the end of a long day that included chasing small creatures, tracking scents, swimming in creeks, and napping under the porch. Dogs were not spayed or neutered, as a rule, and the thought of paying money to a vet for anything other than a life threatening injury was unthinkable. Boarding your dog while on vacation was unheard of!

Times have changed. Dogs now live in our homes, in very close proximity to us. This can lead to misunderstandings when human behavior meets dog behavior.

The fact is, kids and dogs do not speak the same language. Children do not have the life experience nor the ability to recognize this until they are at least seven years old. Many parents make the mistake of thinking only in the terms of their child's behavior as is "Suzy is great with dogs. She does not climb on them or pull their tail". That may be so and that is to be commended. It is NOT reason enough to add a dog or a puppy to your home.

This page is meant to encourage parents to seriously consider the very rare, but completely avoidable consequences that can occur between dogs and children. Bites are extremely rare but when they do occur the great majority are to children. I have included one last video to show what can happen after a child innocently falls on a dog during play. It may be disturbing to sensitive individuals.
